iLooking at the picture, you can see there is only one electron in shell one. That means there is only one electron in a normal hydrogen atom. The atomic number of oxygen is the number of protons it has so it is 8. If it is stable it should exist on the earth. It ought therefore to be an isotope of oxygen. for the element of HYDROGEN, you already know that the atomic number tells you the number of electrons. The oxygen atom has 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 8 electrons. It must however have a mass 17, and provided no other nuclear electrons are gained or lost in the process, an atomic number 8. Once a shell is full, the next electron that is added must move to the next outer shell. Though most oxygen atoms have 8 neutrons some may have less so overall the neutron number for oxygen is averaged at 7.9994. (2-8-8) As you learn about elements with more than eighteen electrons you will find that shell three can hold more than eight.

Shell number one can only hold 2 electrons, shell two can hold 8, and for the first eighteen elements shell three can holds eight electrons. Electrons like to be in separate shells/orbitals. In an atom, the electrons spin around a central area called the nucleus. Each of those colored balls is an electron. Isotopes of atoms can have different numbers of neutrons.

The relative atomic mass minus the atomic number tells you there are no neutrons in the nucleus of an average atom. With the atomic number one, there is one proton in the nucleus and one electron orbiting the nucleus of a normal (electrically neutral) hydrogen atom. It tells you the mass of an average atom (relative atomic mass), how many pieces are inside, and where it should be placed on the periodic table. That box on the left has all of the information you need to know about one element. A neutral oxygen atom (Z 8) has eight electrons, and if it gains two electrons. "Methane and oxygen react".Check out the blackboard. Write and interpret symbols that depict the atomic number, mass number.

Many organisms require oxygen for metabolism, and photosynthetic plants produce oxygen as they convert sunlight to stored energy. 9 15 8 16 The atomic number of oxygen is 8. Molecular oxygen (as O 2) is essential for life. In some areas, the depletion of ozone has created an "ozone hole" - a serious concern for the environment. Ozone forms naturally in the atmosphere, but can be destroyed by reaction with certain pollutants. Ozone (O 3) is a pollutant near the Earth's surface, but is a vital component of the stratosphere, as it forms the ozone layer - a blanket of ozone that shields the planet's surface from ultraviolet radiation. Oxygen also comprises around 21% of the atmosphere as molecular oxygen and ozone.

Oxygen makes up 46% of the Earth's crust, largely as silicates, compounds of oxygen and silicon. Oxygen makes up a large part of the world we live in, both the ground and sky.
